FIRST PECTUS UP SURGERY IN THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY

Dr. José Marcelo Galbis is the first surgeon to perform a surgery with the Pectus Up Surgery Kit in the Valencian Community.

Hospital de la Ribera, in Alcira (Valencia) was the stage of the course Jornadas en Cirugía Torácica, aimed at pediatric and thoracic surgeons interested in the knowledge and management of the pathology and reconstruction of the chest wall.

The course, backed by the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery (SECT), was attended by specialists in thoracic surgery from several hospitals in Spain, such as Dr. Orlando Gigirey, of the San Pedro de Alcántara Hospital in Cáceres, Dr. Roberto Antonio Fernández Anzules, of the Hospital Joan XXIII in Tarragona, Dr. Diana Baquero, of the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, Dr. Julio Ricardo Torres Bermúdez, of the University Hospital Virgen de las Nieves in Granada, or Dr. Anna Muñoz Fos, of the Hospital Reina Sofía in Cordoba.

During the course, Dr. José Marcelo Galbis practiced a live intervention with the Pectus Up, the extrathoracic implant developed by Ventura Medical Technologies that enables the correction of Pectus Excavatum in a minimally invasive way thanks to an extrathoracic approach, which significantly reduces pain and shortens the patient’s recovery time, in this case a 12-year-old boy who was discharged 48 hours after the surgery.

Dr. Galbis is head of the Thoracic Surgery Service and coordinator of the Respiratory Area of ??the Hospital de la Ribera, thoracic surgery consultant at the Hospital Intermutual Levante, President of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery (SECT), and chairman of the research commission of the University Hospital de la Ribera. This center has hence become the first public hospital of the Valencian Community to incorporate the Pectus Up as a pioneering technique to fix the Pectus Excavatum. The hospital belongs to the network of hospitals of the Generalitat Valenciana and was officially in 2000, two years after the closure of the historical Santa Lucia hospital.
